Commuter and Suburban Rail

Commuter rail has become an integrated part of regional transport networks. These heavy rail systems are far-reaching and allow urban areas to expand and help to ensure economic competitiveness.

These higher-speed, mid-distance mainline rail services operate primarily above ground. Major cities like London, New York, and Paris use these services to connect with more compact systems, like metro and light rail networks.

WSP Helps Make your Cities More Accessible

Our teams were involved in many signature commuter and regional rail projects such as the Eagle P3 Commuter Rail Project in Denver, which was the first public transportation project to use the P3 delivery method in the US. We were also involved in the KCRC West Rail in Hong Kong and the Regional Rail Link in Melbourne.

WSP was hired to plan for and facilitate the integration of the two entities into a single unified transit agency (Valley Metro in the US), develop a strategic plan and performance metrics and, subsequently, support implementation. Our team worked with Valley Metro leadership to determine the optimal organizational structure and staffing for the unified agency to support its mission of expanding integrated regional transit services, while simultaneously capturing the resource savings from elimination of redundant or unnecessary functions and the improved efficiency of a single agency. Our team provided the analysis required to develop a “going forward” plan for the unified agency that addressed the organizational structure, talent requirements, and business model(s) needed to deliver cost-effective, coordinated customer services and provide the organizational platform to carry out the agency’s mission and advance its new leadership team’s vision.
