Halifax Electric Bus Feasibility Study

Halifax Transit, in partnership with Nova Scotia Power Inc., was interested in understanding the implications of introducing plug-in battery electric buses (BEB) into its network design and fleet.

Understanding the Energy Requirements

Halifax Regional Municipality sought a study that conforms to or closely mimics the Canada National Research Council’s Fleet Forward methodology in order to determine total energy consumption and electricity costs. The costs include those from appropriate service and demand requirements associated with electric vehicles that utilize energy from the electrical grid system in public transit fleets.

Modelling Options

WSP worked with data on routes and operating conditions provided by Halifax Transit.  This information was used to model end-point charging options versus on-route charging options. The outcome allowed us to understand the battery sizes of buses that could meet Halifax Transit’s needs and charger configurations.

Using its proprietary simulation Battery Optimization and Lifecycle Tool (BOLT), WSP analyzed and evaluated these options on Halifax Transit’s route network. 

WSP developed an Electrifiable Index to determine which routes on the network should be chosen to scale up electric bus operation.
