WSP Associate Vision Design, Fiona Venn, said the winning design uses light to create a unique sense of place and a welcoming environment after dark.
‘Lighting is a key ingredient in the overall student hub and plaza experience so we worked closely with Woods Bagot and Flinders University to get it right.
‘To seamlessly connect the interior and exterior we used a ‘line of light’ that flows between the spaces.
‘The exterior lighting is integrated with the landscape and allows clear views of the large LED display, which is part of the building façade, and allows flexibility for events.
‘As a backdrop, the trees are individually lit to highlight the canopy of leaves and directional post top fittings allow for precise control of the lighting on pedestrian pathways.
‘Inside, we wrapped the ‘line of light’ around the central grand staircase and the main entry lobby.
‘The interior mall and atrium lighting are also integrated with the architecture, featuring large round luminaires concealed behind a mesh ceiling.
‘In adjacent spaces this design is repeated as pendants and surface-mounted downlights.
‘The final result is innovative, flexible and warm,’ Ms Venn concluded.
