Digital Engineering is Transforming the Design Process

With the unique challenges facing designers working on transport infrastructure projects today, the use of digital engineering is on the rise.

Yesterday, Damien Cutcliffe, WSP’s Digital Engineering Lead, presented at the Transport Australia Society WA industry seminar on ‘Best Practice in Digital Design of Transport Infrastructure’. During the event, he showcased our work on the ongoing Sydney Metro and Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade projects in NSW, the Gawler Rail Electrification Project in Adelaide as well as international experience from Sweden.

With more than 20 years of experience working in senior technical roles on projects in Australia and the United Kingdom, Damien shared his insights on how the integration of BIM and GIS platforms has been critical to delivering complex design solutions on some of Australia’s largest transport projects.

Damien says, “Digital engineering gives us a means to visualise complex designs and staging plans which speeds conflict identification and design optimisation. We have seen an unprecedented level of collaboration between clients, contractors, and designers as part of the design phase of a project.”
