Investing in the Next Generation of Rail for a Better Future

Designing rail for a better future will be made possible by investing in the next generation of infrastructure.

This week at AusRail 2018, WSP speakers will share their insights on investments to optimise the performance of the Greater Sydney and Regional NSW rail network.

Graeme Steverson, WSP’s Technical Executive, Integrated Transport Planning will present his paper ‘Which speed rail? The case for faster rail’. This body of work explores the merits of investment in faster rail products to respond to population growth and how supporting infrastructure assets can be designed to evolve alongside technology development. Mr Steverson has been a technical advisor for the development of the Future Transport Strategy 2056 for the New South Wales government since 2017.

Other presenters include Mark Xerri, WSP’s Senior Transport Planner’s who will discuss, ‘Freight rail: the untapped key to resolving passenger rail demand?’ and highlight ways to resolve the capacity issues encountered on our shared rail network. Mr Xerri’s discussion brings a unique perspective on how integrated rail network development can deliver improved services for both passenger and freight customers.

Alongside Mr Steverson and Mr Xerri, Elodie O’Sullivan, WSP Graduate Engineer, and Joyce Pick, Graduate Railway Signalling Engineer, will attend the conference as recipients of AusRail 2018 scholarships.

WSP General Manager for Rail, Mike Jenkins says, “Creating a better rail future will depend on optimising the overall performance of our network.

"A planning approach, such as those that Graeme and Mark provide, encourages us to question how we integrate new rail solutions and technologies. It also brings us one step closer to creating 30 minute cities and supporting economic growth for regional Australia.

“Gaining a solid understanding  into how we can make best use of current assets and infrastructure, allows us to build on the foundations of our existing rail network to support the next generation of rail.”

AusRail 2018 will be held from 27 – 28 November at the National Convention Centre in Canberra.
