On Thursday 22 August, the Australian Bulk Handling Awards hosted their annual gala dinner with more than 130 attendees at the Showtime Events Centre in Melbourne. As Australia’s only dedicated event highlighting achievements in the bulk handling sector, the awards provide broader audiences with deeper insight into the industry.
Winners were selected by a panel of reputable judges from relevant industry associations. The Cataby Mineral Sands operation was selected for excellence in the production of heavy minerals concentrate.
The Cataby project was initiated to bring a long identified mineral sands deposit into production. In June 2019, Iluka Resources (Iluka) successfully opened the newly constructed mineral sands mining and processing operation, applying maximum reuse of existing assets to minimise capital intensity and to reduce environmental impact through extensive modification and redeployment of idle assets.
Cataby will produce an average of approximately 370ktpa of chloride ilmenite and an average of approximately 50ktpa premium grade zircon and approximately 30ktpa rutile. These materials are processed and shipped out for use in the manufacture of pigment for house and car paints, clothing, sunscreen, toothpaste and other consumer goods.
Wayne Robertson, Senior Project Manager, says, “The award is recognition for the team who delivered the project under changing conditions, that achieved the initial target of capital minimisation and ensured a long term profitable business stream for Iluka. It demonstrates our ability to work collaboratively with our clients to achieve outstanding outcomes.”
The Australian Bulk Handling Awards celebrates companies and individuals who deliver above and beyond for clients across the bulk handling industry, supporting the work and ensuring it continues to thrive.
