New Education Lead Appointed

Matthew Salisbury, Regional Director for SA & NT, has been appointed to lead our national education business for the Property and Buildings sector.

With WSP for 15 years, Matthew’s work has taken him to various cities and continents, including Perth, London and his home town Adelaide where he currently resides. For the past ten years, he has managed our team in Adelaide on a number of significant projects which include the University of South Australia’s Pridham Hall, Flinders University Student Hub and Plaza Redevelopment as well as The Sustainable Industries Education Centre. These projects integrate a range of initiatives that embody innovation and provide social, economic and environmental benefits.

“The education industry presents significant opportunities that WSP is well-placed to capture,” says Matthew “Our teams in Australia and across the world have extensive experience in designing sustainable and enduring world-class education facilities and working with clients to create stimulating, collaborative and safe learning environments that foster the critical thinkers of the future.”

As the sector evolves in a more competitive landscape, it is also increasingly disrupted by technology, space limitation and utilisation. We are responding to these challenges and opportunities with intelligent building systems, contemporary design solutions for vertical campuses, technologically-rich classrooms, superlabs, collaborative and adaptable learning spaces.

“Projects such as the Western Sydney University Vertical Campus and the Sustainable Industries Education Centre at Tonsley, SA are great examples of that,” says Matthew.

“Overall, we design sustainable academic buildings that are healthy, safe, and fit for purpose. Ensuring high levels of comfort, air quality, natural lighting, and acoustics create a positive and productive atmosphere for students, ultimately improving their attainment rates. From early childhood learning centres to primary and secondary schools, colleges and some of the world’s most prestigious universities, we cover the entire lifecycle of education facilities, providing a full suite of technical capabilities, design and advisory services; leveraging and mobilising local, national and global talent as required. In addition to core engineering design services comprising building services, specialist disciplines, structural, civil and ESD, we also support business case planning, design campus/site-wide sustainability, power and thermal infrastructure, embedded smart-network design, digital services, land remediation, hazardous goods design consulting, ICT/AV network design and stakeholder engagement.”

Discussing his new appointment Matthew says, “At the heart of my approach, delivering exceptional and sustainable outcomes to our clients is key to our ongoing success and growth. The education industry is an exciting place to be working in right now, particularly as technologies both inside and outside the classroom make learning come alive.”

Beyond the Education sector Matthew is also passionate about diversity and inclusion. He is a member of the SA Chiefs for Gender Equity, a group of senior business leaders representing key industry sectors united in their aim to advance gender equity in the workplace. He is also a supporter of ‘Go Home on Time Day’. Matthew states, “A flexible workplace encourages less absenteeism, better engagement, better creativity, more motivation, and less turnover of staff.”
