Designing for Active, Sustainable and Future-Focused Communities

Graduating from the University of NSW with a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering, Rebecca Powell joined the firm in 2018 as a graduate in our Transport Advisory team in Sydney.

“I’m someone who hates to sit still,” explains Rebecca. “I’m always looking for ways to create better places through new and exciting transport opportunities.

“I’ve particularly enjoyed designing active transport solutions, a sustainable approach that’s becoming more vital to the future of our communities.

“Since starting with the firm, I have had the opportunity to work on active transport schemes, experience life on the Parramatta Light Rail and have spent the last three months in the ACT on a variety of uniquely Canberra projects, even a new jetty for Lake Burley Griffin.”

It’s important to our clients and to all our stakeholders that we keep diversity top-of-mind. It’s a pivotal function that’s critical to delivering the best results for the community.

During her stay in Canberra, Rebecca credits her time of working closely with Cindy Williams, our Regional Director for the ACT, as one of the best development opportunities she has had.

She says, “Cindy has been a great support and mentor for me. Along with others in the firm I have always felt empowered to seek opportunities. My time in Canberra reflects the values the company places on its people regardless of age or gender.”

“Engineering is a people-centric career,” explains Rebecca. “It’s important to our clients and to all our stakeholders that we keep diversity top-of-mind. It’s a pivotal function that’s critical to delivering the best results for the community.”

Taking an active approach in the industry, Rebecca is a member of Pathways – our young professionals network. She is also involved with Engineers Without Borders and the Power of Engineering.

She adds, “I enjoy getting out there and doing extra work for the community as it’s a great way to build my skills and network.

“I’ve managed our Pathways annual client event for the last couple of years in NSW, which has been a great experience. It’s an awesome way for me to learn from our senior professionals whilst also developing skills in areas completely outside my comfort zone.”

Her proactive attitude to career doesn’t end when it comes to her downtime. Rebecca is a keen hobbyist who loves the anything outdoors. This includes skiing, kayaking, camping and scuba diving!
