WSP Wins Gold for Waterview Connection in New Zealand

As part of the Well-Connected Alliance, WSP was recognised by the Association for Consulting and Engineering Professionals (ACENZ) with a Gold Award for road tunnel design and construction excellence of the Waterview Connection.

We received this honour at the 54th ACENZ Innovate Awards held in Christchurch on 9 August 2019.

WSP was the designer on this iconic project alongside Beca and Tonkin + Taylor. Our submission’s winning edge was based on our innovative approach to the tunnel’s design and construction in response to many complexities including accommodating a basalt-rich site, monitoring groundwater and settlement issues and turning the tunnel boring machine – which was the 10th largest in the world at the time – 180 degrees to construct both tunnels.

The project was also noted for the elegance of its solution which integrated engineering with architectural outcomes, incorporated local Maori culture into design and brought together transport and community infrastructure.

Since it first opened in 2017, Waterview Connection has been used by two million vehicles a month on average. The project’s iconic twin tunnels are the deepest and longest road tunnels in New Zealand and provide a second route through Auckland, bypassing the city centre and reducing reliance on State Highway 1 and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The NZ Transport Agency has called this critical connection “a route of choice for Aucklanders traversing the city’s motorway network”.

The ACENZ Innovate awards celebrate excellent achievement in the business of consulting – projects that go “above and beyond” industry standards.
