Improving access on the Central Coast
Transport for NSW proposes to upgrade the Central Coast Highway for approximately 3.6 kilometres between 250 metres north of Tumbi Road intersection at Wamberal and Bateau Bay Road intersection at Bateau Bay. The proposal will see the highway upgraded to two lanes in both directions to improve travel time and safety for 26,500 motorists who use this section of highway daily.
WSP is engaged by Transport for NSW to provide the concept design and environmental assessment for the widening.
This section of highway is currently the only part of the highway that isn’t dual carriageway between Kariong and Doyalson. Once upgraded, this 3.6 kilometre section will have two lanes in each direction, a central median, and upgrades to several key intersections.
Managing environmental and social impacts
WSP’s environmental experts will support Transport for NSW by providing a detailed assessment that will inform the design to maximise positive environmental and community outcomes on the project. Drawing on expertise from multiple business units, we have identified areas to minimise impacts on the environment and community, including:
- traffic and transport
- noise and vibration
- flora and fauna
- soils and water quality
- socio-economic
- flooding.
Designing for tomorrow's trends
The Central Coast Highway Wamberal to Bateau Bay Upgrade employs WSP’s Future Ready design philosophy to account for future trends in the project’s design, development and environmental assessment.
Upon completion, the Central Coast Highway upgrade between Wamberal and Bateau Bay will provide:
- Improved consistent travel time and reduced congestion between Wamberal and Bateau Bay
- Reduced delays at key intersections
- Improved road user safety
- Safer cycling and pedestrian facilities, particularly near intersections
- Enhanced economic growth and productivity, particularly during busy holiday times
“WSP have shown outstanding performance in this reporting period, with many highlights and very few negative aspects to report. A best in market cooperative approach has been demonstrated by the WSP team, and is the key to continuing the success of this team into the remainder of this contract.” Benjamin Phillipson of Transport for NSW.
