North Shore Hospital is a large public hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, offering health services to approximately 500,000 residents. The hospital’s operating theatres had to be expanded and refurbished to accommodate the latest medical equipment and technology.
Collaboration to Overcome Challenges
Our building services team and fire engineering specialists faced two main challenges during this project. The first was how to integrate modern building services into an old facility. The second was working in the live hospital environment to ensure that adjacent theatres could remain in operation while the refurbishment was taking place. By collaborating with all key stakeholders, we found innovative solutions to these challenges. We also used a staged approach for construction.
The refurbishment included upgrading the Central Sterile Services Department, which is required to comply with AS/NZS and ISO Standards. As part of the scope we also upgraded the supporting reverse osmosis and steam facilities, required for specialised machinery.
Improving the Staff and Patient Experience
The North Shore Hospital now has state-of-the-art health infrastructure in its refurbished operating theatres, improving the experience for both patients and staff. By providing a fully integrated design services, WSP delivered a complete package, reducing risk and delays.
We implemented best practice design, employing technology, controls/monitoring, power, operating room control panel, IT and medical gas to industry standards. Our design also allowed for gap assessment and upgrade to the fire and egress strategy. This is to suit any change in operations from the original base build.
