WSP is proud to announce that the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre (IHSC) has won the Canadian Design-Build Institute Award of Excellence. The IHSC is a $124M 4-storey expansion to the Kelowna General Hospital.
With approximately 16,500 sq. ft., the facility includes 15 operating theatres, pre- and post-operating room departments, in-patient care, a central sterilization and reprocessing department, a cardiac surgical intensive care unit and support services.
The facility has been designed with the belief that reliability and performance are cornerstones for the operations of the building; a series of redundant systems and technologies operate in a controlled sequence to create a robust, reliable building environment. Redundancy was a major factor for this project and for the client and it was met throughout the mechanical and electrical systems.
The design incorporated many innovative features that complemented the operational aspects of the building while ensuring sustainability remained a primary focus; energy conservation measures incorporated into the building included heat recovery chillers to preheat domestic hot water, heat recovery coils, ‘free cooling’ capability for air handlers, flue gas heat recovery, and lighting energy target at 10% below ASHRAE 90.1-2007. The project is also LEED Gold certified since February 2017.
The site was previously occupied by a disused building. To accommodate the added fourth floor to an already existing design and partially-constructed building, mechanical connections were located outside one of the walls for easier access during construction as well as for maintenance. This solution was hailed a breakthrough by operational personnel.
WSP provided electrical engineering, communications, IT; mechanical engineering; civil engineering; landscape architecture consulting and sustainability services to the project.
About the Canadian Design-Build Institute Awards
