As part of the conference, Naeem Farooqi, Principal Consultant at WSP, spoke on the topic of green fleet strategies. His presentation built on the interesting work WSP is doing to reduce carbon emissions while improving the efficiency of public works fleet vehicles, including transit.

WSP's Infrastructure division received the award for Top Environmental Project of the Year (over $50 million in capital) for the Queensville/Holland Landing/Sharon (QHLS) Wastewater Servicing project in the Region of York. The project included the design, construction and commissioning of sanitary servicing for those three communities. As well, it included the design, construction and commissioning of a 1,200 L/s wastewater pumping station.

In addition, the Transportation group got top honours for its 2nd Concession Road project, which won the OPWA Project of the Year Award in the Transportation, $50+ million category. Also located in East Gwillimbury, the 2nd Concession is a major north-south arterial corridor that crosses a popular conservation area and recreational trail. The project included road widening, trails, three bridges, retaining walls, active transportation infrastructure, stormwater management, gravity and large forcemain sanitary sewers, watermain and an elevated wooden boardwalk through wetlands and marshes connecting forests with fast-growing residential communities.
