It’s not just about designing and building, we’re problem solvers and we even solve mysteries. Our wind engineering team where set an interesting challenge… to understand why the wind confuses golfers standing on the tee at Sawgrass’s 17th at The Players’ Championship (one of the most iconic holes in golf).
With access to an extensive network of wind tunnel facilities complemented by in-house CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) modelling experts, our teams can analyse the impact wind has on the tallest buildings in the world and study the aerodynamic stability of long-span bridges to reduce the risk of collapse, and more.
So, to solve this mystery we created a 3D model of the hole and the surrounding area, analysed wind statistics to identify key wind directions and ran CFD simulations to find the answer.
Their work could be used by sports broadcasters to overlay live animated CFD simulations to give TV and mobile viewers an idea of the wind flow and direction and the impact it could have on the results. This type of visualisation has the potential to be applied to stadium sports where wind affects play at critical moments, for example, a penalty in rugby in the world cup final.
