Carbon has moved fast up the engineering agenda, and Rachel Skinner’s focus on this in the year of her ICE presidency will accelerate this further. We need carbon to sit alongside cost and reliability as a third imperative for our industry. Giving our teams a deep understanding of what carbon goes where in their schemes. Giving them fast solutions at their fingertips so they can be part of the solution. And to recognise that while lean construction can help cut both costs and carbon, the reality is that unless we accelerate innovation and clever thinking, designing what we’ve done for the past thirty years, just using zero carbon materials is going to cost a lot more.
