Leading engineering and professional service consultant WSP welcomes Government commitment to tackling the industry’s skills gap in the Transport infrastructure skills strategy report.

Jane Grant, WSP UK Head of Learning and Development said: “We welcome Government’s commitment to creating 30,000 apprenticeships in road and rail bodies in today’s Transport infrastructure skills strategy: two years on report. It’s great to see that there is more attention on tackling the skills shortage, because by 2033 the UK is predicted to need more than 91,000 new people in rail and roads to deliver major infrastructure projects that are in the pipeline.

“At WSP apprenticeships are a serious business, we launched our apprenticeship programme in 2010 with only one apprentice and are now proud to employ more than 180 apprentices with a further 80 joining us in September. The introduction of the levy has meant that we can diversify our offerings to have both degree and school-leaver apprenticeship programmes available.

“We need as an industry to forge stronger links with education and training providers to create quality opportunities for young people across the UK. At WSP we invest significant time and energy promoting the value of apprenticeships in schools. And this push is starting to deliver a great result, with a 144% increase in female apprentices joining our 2016 – 2017 intake. But more needs to be done. It’s astounding that only 27% of 11 to 14-year olds admit to knowing what engineers do and it’s our responsibility to change this. We understand the importance of working alongside organisations such as the Association For Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE -UK) to help find those people that can inspire young men and women who made that choice before them.”
