WSP has welcomed a decision by the Scottish Government to approve a multi-million pound film studio to be built on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The global professional services consultancy which was appointed in 2014 to assist in the planning of Scotland’s first purpose-built  film and TV studio, will continue to support on the civil and structural, environmental and geotechnical areas of the project.

Pentland Studios which will be based near Straiton and will cost around £250 million will include six sound stages, two Hollywood style backlots, a 180 room hotel and 50,000 sqft workshop space and a Film Academy.

Gordon Allerton, director at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, said: “We are delighted that the studio has received consent from the Scottish Government.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed supporting Pentland Studios in the planning process and are very grateful to be involved in a project that will have such a positive impact for the whole country.

“Our hope is that we can add to the work that has already been completed, in particular working closely with Midlothian Council to identify a route map for the proposed A701 relief road.”

Gordon Ash, Director, PSL Land Ltd, said: “The team at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff  have been extremely supportive and professional during the planning stages of the studio.

“It is an exciting prospect for everyone now to begin work on bringing Scotland its first world class film and TV studio complex.

“We look forward to working with both WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff and Midlothian Council on the next stages of the project.”

The Pentland Studio project is expected to create more than 1600 jobs and provide a huge boost to Scotland’s ability to attract international blockbuster film productions and TV series, as well as indigenous productions.

As well as working on Scotland’s first film and TV studio, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has been assisting the planning of Wavegarden Scotland, the country’s first in-land surfing lagoon based in Edinburgh.

It was also recently announced that the consultants will work on the regeneration and development of the Ross Band Stand and Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh’s city centre.
