This year 10 out of 19 companies from Building Equality will join forces to create the biggest construction industry presence ever at National Student Pride, aiming to attract LGBT+ students to apply to work in the industry.
Since it was established in 2015, Building Equality has grown from four to 19 member firms working collaboratively to help make the construction industry a place where LGBT+ people can be themselves at work and perform at their best, and to help tackle the skills shortage by encouraging LGBT+ students and early career professionals to apply for roles in the industry. Those attending Student Pride this year are Arcadis, Arup, Atkins, Balfour Beatty, BuroHappold, Kier, Lendlease, Laing O’Rourke, Skanska, and WSP.
The group has previously called for sector leaders to be more willing to talk about homophobia and the value of diversity and inclusivity within the built environment sector.
“The construction industry is improving slowly,” says Jo Hennessey, Chair of Building Equality and committee member of WSP’s LGBT+ employee network, VIBE. “Recent surveys indicate a shift in the right direction but there is definitely much more work to do. Attitudes amongst those entering the industry in the early stages of their careers are already markedly more LGBT-inclusive than those who have been in the industry for a number of years. And now we have an ever-growing number of construction companies who are making a public commitment to creating inclusive workplaces to enable LGBT+ employees to thrive.
“With more construction firms than ever championing LGBT+ inclusion, this is why it’s important that we stand united at Student Pride this year to demonstrate that construction welcomes LGBT+ students.”
