The new student accommodation will be located in St Thomas’ Street in Bristol, an area that has been undergoing significant regeneration plans since 2017 with the likes of the Redcliff Quarter development. What was previously a three-storey office building will now be replaced with brand new student accommodation up to three times its size at nine storeys above ground floor. It will comprise of 357 student rooms, a Ground Floor occupied by a mix of commercial and student hub space and a basement housing plant and a large cycle store.
Current proposals for the site is to form the new building in flat slab reinforced concrete construction, which would allow the building to be adapted in the future for a different use if necessary. These proposals are initiated by WSP as part of their ‘Future Ready’ programme incorporated into all of their projects that will help encourage retention and continual use of this site.
Peter Bone, Technical Director at WSP and project manager says, “We are delighted to have been appointed by F3 Group to provide civil and structural together with mechanical and electrical engineering design services for this exciting and challenging project in the heart of Bristol.”
With demolition of the previous structure at this site due to take place in the coming weeks with the view to complete the project by September 2020, the team lead by WSP’s Bristol offices, will be providing mechanical and electrical, civil and structural engineering services, as well as providing fire and vertical transportation services to the new structure. The building is also expected to receive BREEAM certification to recognise the project’s sustainability.
