Planning for high-density whilst managing existing operations

Our client needed a masterplan that supported existing operations whilst paving the way for a future high-density community. A key challenge was to manage the varying needs of multiple existing operators in the area, including AEG, operators of The O2, Thames Clipper river services and the Emirates Cable Car. At the same time, the project team was tasked with creating a new transport interchange with a new bus station, taxi rank and London Underground station entrance, together with relocated car parking, a new footbridge over the Blackwall Tunnel approach roads and a 5km cultural walkway.

An enhanced, human-scale environment

We worked collaboratively with the client, architects and other members of the project team to provide transport planning and infrastructure design advice to achieve a well-designed and sustainable high-density development. Our transport masterplanning advice has provided careful consideration of the street hierarchy design, walking and cycling connections to create an enhanced, human-scale environment. Through our bus route design, and the urban design of the new commercial and public transport interchange for bus and London Underground services, we’ve made sure the infrastructure is in place to support a development of this scale and the community that will soon call it home.

Achieving consent and enabling delivery

Our work contributed to the masterplan being granted planning consent, enabling construction of the development and delivery of the bold vision to transform Greenwich Peninsula. The Peninsula and the community is rapidly evolving into a modern cultural landscape with public realm, parks and sustainable transport at the heart of the design.

The WSP team of environmental and transportation experts were instrumental in navigating through the complicated planning process for the Greenwich Peninsula masterplan and continue to work with us through its implementation.
