Consumer Products

In today’s consumer products industry, manufacturers must find cost-effective ways to manage operations while delivering high quality and differentiated products. At WSP, we understand the challenges our clients face. Our global design and engineering expertise helps transform facilities and enables our clients to stay ahead of trends and optimise their processes, improving margins and market share.

Designing and implementing projects

As well as navigating an increasingly competitive market, consumer product manufacturers must contend with uncertain demand, shifting tastes, and changing standards and regulations – all while maintaining profitability and managing global supplier networks. This comes with huge changes in technology, consumer preferences, sales channels, marketing approaches, barriers to entry, and supply chain and logistics strategies.
Adapting to client requirements, standards, project specifications and local conditions, we work closely with manufacturers to tackle these challenges. From apparel and household products to health, beauty and personal care items, we design and implement projects encompassing a wide range of consumer products and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG).
Our team provides technical and managerial expertise, and the experience needed to deliver optimal and cost-effective solutions based on the latest industry technologies, efficiency, and regulatory standards. We have achieved exceptional results in both greenfield and brownfield project environments, while maintaining the highest health, safety and regulatory standards.
Wide-ranging skills for consumer products
Consumer product and FMCG companies worldwide are reassessing and upgrading their facilities to optimise processes, as well as seeking innovative ways to respond to product trends.
We offer clients a diversified skill set, specialist knowledge and integrated solutions encompassing all engineering disciplines: a single point of responsibility. This enables us to add value at all stages of the product lifecycle – from research and pilot plants to full-scale manufacture and packaging operations.
Wherever they are in the world, clients can call on our global network of offices to assist them. This approach combines international best practice with sensitivity to local constraints, conditions, regulations, and budgetary requirements.
What’s more, our global capability enables us to deliver fast-track projects with an outstanding health and safety record. As a 17-times winner of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Award and holder of the RoSPA Order of Distinction, we put health and safety at the heart of our culture.

Consumer industry projects

Clients across the sector have benefitted from our consultancy, design, engineering, procurement, construction management, project management and commissioning expertise.
Seamless integration for Novozymes
Novozymes approached WSP to help expand capacity at an enzyme manufacturing plant in Kalundborg, Denmark. The challenge: it had to be done without disrupting ongoing production. We integrated the extra capacity seamlessly into the existing facilities, guiding the project all the way from design to construction, installation and testing.
Planning future growth for Reckitt Benckiser
We devised a ten-year growth plan for Reckitt Benckiser’s pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Hull, UK. After identifying areas of growth, constraints, expansion and improvement we came up with three alternative solutions for extending the facility. We then developed these into a ten-year masterplan, backed by a capital investment plan and a detailed site layout that will guide the facility into the future.

Our depth of knowledge enables us to provide a ‘one stop shop’ approach for our clients – from initial strategy and planning through to design and implementation of complete facilities. Some of our services include:

  • Strategy development and site masterplanning
  • Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies
  • Layout development in accordance with cGMP
  • Process, mechanical, electrical, and automation engineering and design
  • Filling and packaging line design
  • Materials handling systems design
  • Aseptic design
  • Specialist warehouse and distribution centre design (including cold stores)
  • Plant and energy optimisation
  • Health, safety and environmental assessments
  • Process risk analysis (HAZOP, HAZAN, HACCP)
  • Design coordination, 3D modelling and simulation throughout the entire project lifecycle
    Full project and construction management
