Local Government

At WSP we care about the issues facing local government and have a long track record of assisting our clients to successfully tackle the pressures facing them. We can help address the intensification of cities and towns while satisfying the need to protect green space. We can also improve their transport systems – increasing quality, safety, accessibility and good connectivity to reduce social isolation.

The pace of technological change continues to increase and we work in partnership with our local government clients to deliver appropriate and affordable solutions to problems. We assist our clients to respond to rapid changes in technology and to be Future Ready. This can include advances in clean energy and highway infrastructure to meet growing demand for electric charging, as well as the likely transition to autonomous vehicles.

We provide advice and deliver projects that support the government’s long-term strategic infrastructure investment plan, as well as the ambitious plans of devolved and localised administrations across the UK. We support sub-national and local government bodies to improve the towns, cities and rural communities they serve – delivering buildings, energy, transportation and infrastructure projects.

Our highly skilled colleagues provide the full range of skills needed to support our clients to conceive, finance and deliver a wide range of capital projects to benefit local communities and economic growth. We know that access to key employment locations and ease of access for goods to markets are fundamental business drivers for many communities.

We understand the pressures on local government to take more ownership of community assets, but with decreasing finance and the need to deliver more for less. We are responding to constraints on revenue spending by assisting our clients with market leading asset management strategies and implementation plans.

Our tailored services

Our strong local presence and in-depth knowledge of local social, political and economic conditions enable us to tailor our services to the specific needs of our clients. Our local government clients include urban authorities such as Westminster City Council, Leeds City Council, Transport for London and Transport for Greater Manchester.

To give one example, we are the delivery partner for Transport for Greater Manchester, working in a fully-integrated way with the client to deliver a £1.85 billion investment programme across the Metrolink system.

We work closely with numerous rural and municipal councils throughout the UK. These include Shropshire Council, and Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Somerset, North Yorkshire and Norfolk County Councils. We have long track records of supplying professional services either through collocation with our clients or from our strong network of regional offices.

Our long standing relationships with contractor partners enable us to deliver integrated services when clients want a ‘one stop shop’ approach with combined professional services and constructor/maintainer operations.

A lasting legacy

Our long-term relationships with many local government clients have enabled real efficiency gains to be realised. We have shown that ‘more for less’ can be achieved through revised work practices and a managed programme of risk-based asset management regimes. For example, our support to Shropshire Council in creating a new Commissioner – Service Provider model, which provided new ways of working, and increased customer focus and overall affordability.

We have created a lasting legacy, beyond the requirements of the immediate service contract for many of our long-term relationships with local authority clients.

An excellent example of delivering social value is our close work with Shropshire Council to deliver a programme of STEM activities to local primary and secondary schools, providing fantastic work experience for students. This was recognised by the award won by our Highways Team at the ICE West Midlands Regional 2017 Awards under the Education category, for our local Technician, Apprentice and Graduate learning and development programme.
