CSL Biotherapies sought to construct a new state-of-the-art facility at its Broadmeadows site and adopt green energy solutions for the manufacture of Privigen®, the first and only ready-to-use, room-temperature stored, liquid intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) product used to treat infections as well as autoimmune diseases and neurological conditions.

Currently manufactured in Bern, Switzerland, the new AU$ 150 M Turner PRIVIGEN® Facility would replicate the Swiss facility to increase CSL’s total immunoglobulin (Ig) therapy production capacities to meet future consumer demand and strengthen its global Ig therapeutics business. Privigen® produced at the Turner Facility will be made available in many countries including the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Our Approach

WSP was commissioned to undertake mechanical services design and documentation of CSL’s new facility.

Our approach was to work collaboratively with CSL to understand their process, business and the environment in which they operate to provide a high-quality outcome required on such a project.

An exceedingly coordinated 3D modelling was used to minimize or eliminate on-site clashes between mechanical and other services.

To adopt green energy solutions, the mechanical solution provided employs large scale plant including chilled water systems (3.0 MW), cooling water systems (5.7 MW), heating hot water systems (1.0 MW), compressed air, steam and glycol systems to service process equipment and HVAC systems.

Outcome and Client Benefits

WSP successfully completed the project including Stage 4 works (expansion of the facility), while the facility was still in operation.

The facility comprises clean rooms rated up to Grade B and a QC laboratory area. Cleanroom systems were designed with focus on reliability, tight environmental controls and serviceability.

Though the use of high-efficiency plant and equipment was adopted to comply with CSL’s requirement for low energy solutions, proactive and innovative thinking led to improved energy-efficient outcomes, over and above the original client briefing requirements.
