This is the first IKEA store to open in Korea. While the Korean marketplace is well-served with high-quality furniture retailers, the market has been largely devoid of a discount retailer akin to IKEA. As a result of this new market offering, and the store’s location within the Seoul metropolitan region next to the Gwangmyeong KTX Station (high-speed rail), it is expected to be a big hit with the tens of millions of people living nearby. The new IKEA is located within the Seoul metropolitan region next to the high-speed rail Gwangmyeong KTX Station.
Construction on the building began in August 2013 and was completed for its grand opening celebration, set for Thursday, December 18. Approximately 135,000 square meters in size (including parking). The store itself is 53,739 square meters and includes what you would typically expect at an IKEA including an impressive showroom, warehouse area, food court, and children’s play area. The building also includes office space for IKEA’s country managers, and a 1,000seat restaurant. IKEA recently held an opening ceremony for their second store at Goyang-si. In total, the Swedish retailer plans to operate six stores in the country by 2020.
WSP has been proud to work with IKEA on their first Korean store just south of Seoul in Gwangmyeong, and again on their second store being built to the north in Goyang. Both stores have rooftop solar panels and feature IKEA's famous interior design. WSP provided construction management and other related engineering services, for IKEA’s first store in Gwangmyeong and second store in Goyang.
