West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) is one of the world’s largest and most ambitious arts and cultural building programme which will deliver numbers of new performance and visual arts venues, museums, open spaces, education resources, commercial and retail opportunities.
The Lyric Theatre Complex will be Hong Kong’s first world-class facility for dance performances, including ballet, contemporary and Chinese dance forms. In the run up to the opening of further major performing arts venues in the WKCD, it will also be used for a wide variety of performing arts events including drama, opera and musical performances. The Lyric Theatre Complex will act as a platform for Hong Kong’s leading arts organisations, and be a new major venue to show programmes from Asia and worldwide. It will sit alongside M+ at the western end of the WKCD, and be accessible via Artist Square and the waterfront promenade. Its location also creates the opportunity for the building design to offer views out over the Victoria harbour. The Complex is composed of the Lyric Theatre, a 1,450 seat venue focused on dancing performance; two smaller theatre focused venues, the 600-seat Medium Theatre and the 200-seat Studio Theatre; and the Resident Company Centre, a full range of professional rehearsals, communal and supporting facilities serving as a powerhouse for creativity dedicated for long term dance development.
We have been acting as the Building Services, Fire and Sustainability sub-consultants under the joint venture of UNStudio (Netherlands) and AD+RG (Hong Kong) for the project since 2014 for the design of both Lyric Theatre Complex and WKCD Common Basement.
