WSP’S LRDP TEAM CONNECTS WORLD CUP STADIUMS ON THE ROAD TO 2022 FIFA WORLD CUP IN QATAR

Our Local Roads & Drainage Programme (LRDP) team in Qatar have accomplished a major milestone by completing the roads surrounding and leading to the Al Bayt and Al Rayyan World Cup stadiums in Doha.

These two very important 2022 World Cup facilities will host several matches during the tournament and this milestone reinforces that we are playing a major role in providing Qatar with world-class infrastructure in line with the country’s National Vision 2030 goals.

The newly opened roads are part of a wider scheme that is being realised everyday thanks to the successful partnership and integrated team structure that we have with our Client.”

At Al Bayt Stadium, the project included the construction of 13km and 5.4km roads around the stadium, which consisted of three lanes in each direction. The roads provide direct connection with main roads such as Al-Khor Road and Al Egda Street.

In order to facilitate spectators' access to the Al Bayt Stadium area, bus and car access points were provided to designated parking spaces around the stadium. These include six entrances with traffic lights to regulate the movement of cars inside the parking spaces, in addition to 19 designated bus entrances.

Shared pedestrian and cycle paths of 11 km in length and 8.5 meters in width were constructed, in addition to the installation of lighting systems using energy saving LED lights that aesthetically fit the stadium lighting, installing ITS, afforestation, and landscaping in the area surrounding the stadium. This is in addition to constructing a pedestrian path that is 4.4km long and 3m wide on both sides of the road.

In addition to road works, the project included the construction of a 2.2km sewage network, a separate stormwater drainage network, and an irrigation network using TSE to irrigate the area leading to the stadium and its surroundings. This in turn is connected to the existing network near Al Khor Corniche.

Over at Al Rayyan Stadium, the project provides a direct link to and from the stadium, and spans a total length of about 5km with two lanes in each direction. Three signal-controlled intersections and one roundabout were constructed to facilitate access to Mall of Qatar, Al Majd Road, and the roads connecting to Celebrations Street. This will help serve vital destinations such as Al Rayyan Hotel and facilitate movement of spectators between these destinations and the stadium.

This project helps link the Al Rifaa area with neighbouring suburbs and facilitates access to vital centres adjacent to the new roads such as Mall of Qatar, Al Rifaa Celebrations Complex, and Al Rayyan Sports Club. One of the most important features of the project is its link with Al Rifaa Metro Station, which is located at the Gate of Mall of Qatar.

The project also included the implementation of a 10km surface water drainage network and a 3km sewage network in addition to installation of 339 electricity poles, diversion of existing infrastructure services, installation of traffic lights, signs and road markings. This is in addition to beautification works in the areas adjacent to the roads, on an area of 70,000 square metres including 216 trees and 1,300 shrubs. A 7km irrigation network and a 2km potable water network were also constructed.

The two projects had to overcome some major interface challenges during the construction with the surrounding expressways to ensure connectivity and reduce commercial impacts. Despite these and other challenges, the projects were completed to schedule.

To-date, 69 projects have been delivered and opened for beneficial use on the LRDP with 47 more projects currently under construction.
