Kaituna River Re-diversion and Maketu Estuary Enhancement Project
After a 60-year absence, significant volumes of freshwater is again flowing through the Te Awa o Ngātoroirangi / Maketu Estuary on the Bay of Plenty Coast bringing new marine and bird life.
WSP’s planners have been the nerve center of this award-winning NZ＄16.6M project to reverse damage caused when the Kaituna River was diverted from the estuary in 1956.
Working with iwi, the community and public bodies, we sought to restore the estuary’s health to benefit nature and enrich people’s lives.
Navigating the project through planning, we also managed the construction phase and continue to monitor and evaluate the estuary’s nature-led recovery.
