Designed by Foster+Partners, the Marseille Provence Airport project involves the expansion of the existing facility, along with the construction of a new terminal core, bringing together all MP1 terminal functions and businesses. The new facilities will accommodate increased flows reaching 12 million passengers per year, while the airport's annual revenues are expected to rise by 40% by 2025.
WSP is providing all the required building and infrastructure technical expertise. The team is also overseeing the implementation of the environmental component.
Over the next few years, various structures will be built as part of a two-phase process:
- Phase I will focus on the terminal core, covering an area of 20,000 m² and connecting sub-terminals A and B (Terminal 1). Numerous operational functions will be centralized, including security controls, alongside new-generation equipment. The range of shops and restaurants will be expanded thanks to new airside space.
- Phase II, slated for 2027, involves the construction of a 13,500 m² international boarding pier in the expanded terminal core. This will include additional aircraft gates, bringing Terminal 1's total passenger capacity from 8 million currently to 12 million.
These two phases represent an estimated total investment of €250 million, including all related work. The project also includes the airside infrastructure work, together with improvements to the C5/C6 taxiways and aircraft gate construction.
WSP is responsible for the buildings, infrastructure and all work packages, including asbestos removal, civil engineering structures, steel framing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, smoke ventilation, plumbing, sprinklers, high/low-power supply, horizontal/vertical mechanical transport, roadways and various landside networks, taxiway infrastructure and aircraft gates.
Under French regulations, this is a "core mission", supplemented by various additional missions (assessment of all architectural/technical interior works, coordination of fire safety systems, architectural/technical overview, work supervision with 24-hour on-site on-call availability, etc.).
In partnership, WSP is also spearheading the regulatory environmental studies (impact studies) and the high-quality environmental (HQE) certification process (sustainable building).
