Completed in 2008 the Bowen Centre is an integrated multi-practice consulting premises on land adjacent to the existing Bowen Hospital on Churchill Drive, Wellington.

As the building was being built, multiple private healthcare tenants were signed up and the facility was designed to accommodate their bespoke requirements. The completed building includes a full radiology suite with provision for MRI scanner and X-ray protection, a full endoscopy suite with sleeping accommodation, together with numerous individual consultation rooms. The site location added an additional level of complexity with considerations required for a steep slope landing directly onto a commuter railway line, nearby powerlines and imposed parking requirements.

Towards the end of the project WSP were engaged to design a 5-theatre operating suite at the opposite end of the site. This included demolition of existing facilities, then design of a full suite-partly in new construction and partly in refurbished existing hospital. This project was complicated by the need for a new structure to fit with the existing, the need to overcome necessary planning obstacles, and the need to keep the rest of the hospital operational throughout.

Despite the challenges presented by the site and complexity of the facilities, both projects were delivered on time and to tight budgets resulting in modern additions to the Bowen Hospital Complex.
