The number of passengers flying between destinations is growing strongly, so is the number of flights all around the globe. This puts more and more pressure on the hub that connects everything together: the airport.
Demands for parking lots and better transit systems increase, terminal operations need to be more efficient, larger facilities are required to house bigger aircraft, and advanced technological systems are expected in baggage handling, check-in and passenger data gathering.
Airports are evaluating existing infrastructure and determining the need for rehabilitation, upgrade or new construction.
Putting WSP’s Airport Buildings Experience to Work for You
We have experience with all types of airport buildings and their interfaces with the civil works. We create synergies between technology, infrastructure and logistics in order to maximize energy savings and sustainability. Examples include:
- Passenger terminal buildings
- Control towers
- Cargo buildings
- Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Facilities (MRO)
- Fire and rescue stations
- Administrative buildings
- Parking garages
- Consolidated rental-car facilities
- Storage facilities
We had the privilege of working on Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada, North America’s first airport PPP project. The terminal development program at the airport was the principal component of the airport’s CA$4.4 billion airport development program. In coordination with the Airport Authority, a staging plan was developed to build a new terminal facility while ensuring that airport airside and landside traffic was maintained. This included an interim infield terminal hold facility and new cargo facilities to replace existing cargo and terminal buildings destined for demolition to make room for the new terminal. In spite of the complications of building a new facility on the footprint of the existing facilities while maintaining airport operations for the travelling public, the program was completed on an accelerated schedule and within the budget set for the program.

Focusing on Sustainability
Over the years, there has been a rise in environmental awareness and airports are now working together to reduce - and ultimately eliminate - their carbon footprint. The objective is clear: the aviation industry wants to cut 50 percent of its net carbon emissions by 2050, compared with 2005 levels.
WSP is a leader in this field. Highly involved and sensitive to the issue, we are administrators of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program launched by the ACI Europe, and have certified to date more than 150 airports around the world, welcoming 31.2 percent of global air traffic annually.
If you are contemplating new infrastructure construction or improving existing ones, we have the expertise and experience to develop the best solution to meet your requirements while respecting the industry’s demand for safety and efficiency.
