Preserving the legacy
The ambition of investor PKO BP is to preserve its legacy, while providing sustainable, public space and modern building to the city inhabitants. We are supporting the investor and architects with mechanical engineering design as well as BREEAM and LEED certification, energy modelling and thermal comfort analysis.
The new design assumes preservation of the building’s size and form, as well as restoration of its original character – lightness, translucency, availability and transparency. The new facility has been designed as service space with banking function and open public space on ground level. The total area comprises of over 3,800 m². The building should be seen as modern and sustainable, while retaining its geometry. The urban square, being part of the modernisation, will have a recreational function and comply with technical and usage requirements.
The integration of sustainability analysis for certification with mechanical and electrical services' design has influenced efficiency of implementation of sustainable solutions into the project.
efficient ventilation system, good indoor air quality and thermal comfort;
using of low carbon heating technology;
reduction of heat island effect, by using special finishing materials on the roof and on hardened surfaces;
energy saving external lighting;
possibility of individual lighting control for 90% of users;
using rainwater for plants’ watering;
building policies on responsible purchasing and waste segregation;
assumption of using recycled, low carbon and local materials for construction;
parking space and showers for cyclists;
public space inside and outside the building;
public consultation, being important element of sustainable design.
Energy modelling has indicated that Rotunda will be more energy efficient by 17.7% than a reference building. Further, thanks to building life cycle analysis and materials' life cycle analysis, it has been decided to use energy efficient materials, with the optimal operating cost within first 60 years of building life.
