Hong Kong International Terminals (CT4,6,7,8 East and 9 North)

Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT) is the largest privately developed and operated container terminal in Hong Kong and includes terminals 4, 6, 7, 8 East and 9 North, handling more than 50 percent of Hong Kong’s container trade. HIT has a container stacking capacity of more than 15,500 TEUs (twenty-foot/6-meter equivalent unit) and handles more than 6 million TEUs per year.

The terminals have a continuous quay length totaling more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) accommodating 14 ship berths, 9 barge berths served by 51 quay cranes, four rail-mounted jib cranes, and one harbor crane. These are adjacent to the container storage, which is handled by 24 rail-mounted gantry cranes and 143 rubber tire gantry cranes.

As one of the world’s most sophisticated container terminals, HIT is equipped with the most modern equipment and facilities, as well as a state-of-the-art computerized container yard management system, enabling real time planning and control of all container handling activities, including container yard pre-planning, vessel operation monitoring, data interchange with clients, truck control, and operations.

WSP provided mechanical and electrical system design of the container freight station, the engineering operation complex building and the gate house buildings. Responsibilities also included design of the central computer room for the container yard management system and the container yard security, and a closed circuit television system.
