Masoud Mehrraoufi introduced an analysis method for seismic-resilient bridge design during a presentation to the 2018 Transportation Research Board annual meeting.

 

nws-Mehrraoufi-MasoudGLASTONBURY, CT — Masoud Mehrraoufi, a lead structural engineer and senior technical principal in the Connecticut office of WSP USA, formerly WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, introduced an analysis method for seismic-resilient bridge design during a presentation to the 2018 Transportation Research Board annual meeting.

Mehrraoufi’s presentation, “Modified Elastic Dynamic Analysis (EDA) for Seismic Demand on In-Span Hinge Shear Keys in Multi-Frame Bridges” is part of his research at the University of Connecticut, sponsored by California Department of Transportation.

“Earthquake engineering has evolved in recent decades with a tendency toward performance-based seismic design, which offers the opportunity for owners to choose the resilience level of their assets. This advancement needs more accurate tools and methods in seismology, structural engineering, damage and loss analysis to achieve the target performance, and to assure public safety,” said Mehrraoufi. “The proposed analysis is an enhancement of an existing method in structural dynamics and allows for more accurate shear key forces, which is essential to integrity of multi-frame bridges.”

Mehrraoufi’s findings are expected to be implemented in the State of California’s seismic design criteria.

Mehrraoufi has practiced structural engineering for more than 10 years. He joined WSP in 2015 after graduating from the University of Connecticut with Ph.D. in civil engineering. WSP recognized him as a senior technical principal in January 2018. He led the design of part of the west roadway structures at the LaGuardia Airport Terminal B replacement project.

Mehrraoufi conducts research in seismic design, bridge structures, and structural dynamics. He is a peer reviewer for several publications of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Prior to joining WSP, he was a lead structural engineer and a partner in a prominent Iranian engineering company. He was involved in structural design of long-span bridges, seismic retrofit, and mid-rise buildings.
