NEW YORK CITY — WSP USA, a leading engineering and professional services firm, is participating in Climate Week NYC 2019 events, announcing its own carbon neutrality achievements and promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
WSP sustainability experts will appear at two Climate Week NYC events. On Sept. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Dan Sobrinski, WSP vice president of Sustainability, Energy and Climate Change, will join a panel discussion titled “From Tactical to Transformational: Can Carbon Neutral Programs Deliver a Net Zero Global Economy?” Organized by Natural Capital Partners, the panel will explore the value of carbon neutral programs, how they are being used to drive corporate strategy and what’s required to ensure they deliver a net zero global economy. Open to the public, this panel will be hosted at the offices of BCG, 10 Hudson Yards, 347 10th Ave., New York, NY.
John Chow, WSP vice president and senior supervising transportation planner, and Alyssa Curran, associate consultant, U.S. Advisory Services, will participate in a private Global Adaptation & Resilience Investment Working Group (GARI) meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Launched at COP21, the Paris Climate Conference—in conjunction with the UN Secretary General's Anticipate, Absorb, Reshape (A2R) climate resilience initiative—GARI brings together public and private stakeholders to focus on risk assessment; climate adaptation and resilience investment, research and strategy; partnership operationalization; and coordination of activities to achieve material results.
UN Global Compact
WSP is also a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest global corporate sustainability initiative. During Climate Week NYC, WSP social media channels will spotlight how employees’ work and personal commitments to sustainability support the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which serve as a blueprint to achieve a more sustainable future by 2030, by addressing global challenges related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.
Achievement of Carbon Neutrality
In keeping with its Future ReadyTM initiative and commitment to sustainability, WSP USA recently achieved its carbon neutrality commitment for calendar year 2018.
WSP actively manages the impact of its approximately 9,500 employees and 150 offices across the country through office energy and business travel efficiencies; the sourcing of Green-e renewable energy; and the purchase of high-impact carbon offsets from U.S.-based projects certified by Gold Standard and Climate Action Reserve.
“WSP recognizes that taking a leadership role in addressing climate change is a must,” said Michael Mondshine, director of WSP’s Sustainability, Energy and Climate Change practice. “For societies and the environment to thrive, we believe that we must hold ourselves accountable for tomorrow. Participating in Climate Week NYC, working toward the UN SDGs, and achieving our carbon neutrality commitment for 2018 are all critical to advancing our Future Ready initiative and incorporating sustainability into our business practices and relationships.”
Future Ready is WSP USA’s approach to planning and designing infrastructure that is ready for the changes and challenges the world may face in the future. The program was created to help clients prepare for change, whether it be sea level rise, higher temperatures, increased use of distributed and renewable power, growing connectivity, shifts social structures and demographics, or other trends.
