NEW YORK — WSP, a leading engineering and professional services consultancy, has secured the top engineering slot on the Building Design + Construction (BD+C) annual Giants 400 ranking of engineering firms. This marks WSP’s third year in a row at the top of the list.
BD+C’s Giants 400 report – expanded from the previous Giants 300 report – ranks architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) firms by discipline across 25 building sectors and specialty categories. More than 480 U.S.-based firms participated in the 2019 report.
“We are honored to once again top the list of North American engineering firms,” said Rick Rome, Chief Operating Officer, WSP USA Property and Buildings. “We are grateful that our clients continue to trust WSP as their engineering partner to develop innovative solutions for their complex challenges. As 2020 has presented all of us with unprecedented challenges, our focus has been to continue to serve our clients with dependable engineering services as they adapt, adjust and thrive in a world with higher expectations for health, safety and security.”
WSP’s top ranking is based on its 2019 revenue of $463 million in North America, more than $150 million above the second-ranked firm. This success is reflected in multiple projects completed across the U.S in 2019, including 15 Hudson Yards in New York City, the Akamai Global Headquarters in Boston, the adaptive reuse of the Old Chicago Post Office in Chicago, and the Promedica Generations Tower in Toledo.
This year, WSP’s property and buildings team faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic head-on, helping healthcare clients adapt existing facilities for surge capacity and create temporary hospital conversions for treating COVID patients, completing projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Boston Medical Center, Meritus Medical Center, and several others.
Looking ahead, WSP will continue growing its business in order to offer a wider array of engineering expertise to clients nationwide in markets including healthcare, science + technology, higher education, mission critical, workplace, residential and several others. The firm is also focused on growing its specialty offerings to complement MEP and structural engineering practices, including smart buildings, facility cybersecurity, high performance sustainable design, commissioning, and others.
In addition to the overall ranking, WSP ranked high in several specialty categories, including a third year as the highest-ranked pure-play engineering firm for healthcare buildings, second for laboratory facilities, third for multi-family residential buildings, fourth for cultural facilities, fifth for commercial buildings, sixth for government sector projects, sixth for K-12 school buildings, and seventh for both university and sports facilities.
