As part of evaluating multiple route options for Unity Bridge, WSP USA provided master planning and an alternative analysis study. In studying the environmental constraints, impact on key stakeholders, emergency response time and construction cost, JBLM leadership decided that a four-lane bridge combined with at-grade roadways would be best for inter-base travel and eliminate the need to exit and re-enter multiple ACPs. WSP served as the prime consultant responsible for preparation of design-build RFP documents up to 65 percent design to coordinate impacts to railroad operations. The design included the bridge, approach roads and paving using hot mix asphalt, entry gates/control points and security fence alteration, low impact development design, erosion control and stormwater management. WSP provided oversight of a multidisciplinary team, and provided project management, quality assurance and quality control, civil engineering, structural engineering, and survey services. The bridge uses standard Washington Department of Transportation precast, prestressed girders, and is 370 feet in length.
