Delivering Fiber-Optic Cable System
Spurred by communication needs and economic development linked to the Brazil 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, WSP USA helped deliver the 19,000-kilometer submarine América Móvil 1 fiber-optic cable system (AMX-1 System) for Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN) and América Móvil, S.A.B. de C.V. — the leading wireless services provider in Latin America.
Challenges Overcome with Lessons Learned, Local Knowledge
Responsible for landing points in four of the seven involved countries in the Americas, WSP’s challenge was to simultaneously juggle the varying permitting regulations/requirements of each country and acquire necessary permits for the cable project with enough time for construction. Having worked on nearly every cable system in Brazil, our team applied lessons learned from work in-country and on over 50,000 miles of fiber-optic cable worldwide, quickly educated involved parties on permitting needs and immediately mobilized the environmental studies while remaining responsive to country-specific needs.
