Various alternative structural solutions were explored to accommodate the tight budget and need for column free spaces, especially at the library and auditorium areas. To maximize the open spaces at the law school below, two curved trusses extending the entire length of the dorm within the mechanical floor, were supported on six mega columns.
Column free spaces were also created by hanging large floor areas from vierendeel trusses between the top levels of the law school. Conventional steel framing with composite concrete on metal deck flooring was selected for the law school. The framing of the dormitory floors however, consists of 30’ long precast planks supported on staggered trusses with the floors alternately supported on the top and bottom chords. This system results in a considerable saving in both building height and cost.
