To meet future technology and sustainability demands, the Cass Gilbert-designed Thurgood Marshall Courthouse in lower Manhattan, New York City required a complete MEP infrastructure upgrade, in addition to other renovations. WSP worked closely with the GSA to provide specialized systems to meet this need while being sensitive to the landmark status of the courthouse.

All existing engineering systems were removed and replaced. The combined effect of the new lighting and other building system upgrades was a project energy savings of 15% compared with new construction, helping the project earn LEED Silver certification. The project goals were achieved without major modifications to the building envelope’s thermal properties.
