Traffic was congested in Fort Worth, and in smaller cities to the east—North Richland Hills, Haltom City, Hurst, Bedford and Euless. A new highway, the North Tarrant Expressway, was needed to ease the flow of traffic.
The Texas Department of Transportation commissioned WSP to undertake the highway design, which involved the insertion of a new 2+2 toll lanes expressway (with possible extension to 3+3) adjacent to the existing toll-free highway.
The works were completed along the IH 820, IH 35W and SH 183 corridors. The Spanish Construction Company Ferrovial was responsible for construction, maintenance and operation of the infrastructure. The existing highway route was altered to allow space for new toll lanes. Frontage road routes were also amended.
The completed project included:
- 34 viaducts.
- Four overpasses and one skywalk.
- Drainage structures, landscaping, signage, lighting and traffic signals.
- The design of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for the lanes.
