Fourways Mall was originally built 23 years ago. With this development, it will expand from 90,000m² to 170,000m², making it one of the three largest shopping centres in South Africa alongside Gateway in Umhlanga Rocks Shopping Mall, and Canal Walk at Century City in Cape Town. Together with other prominent letting enterprises within the Fourways’ retail node, the Mall forms part of long-term future development envisioned for the Fourways and Douglasdale precincts. 

WSP played a key role in developing the initial concept for the development. The project consists of two phases: Phase 1 includes extensions and upgrades to the existing mall. Phase 2 consists of further mall extensions, office space additions and additional parking. Currently, we provide civil and structural engineering for all internal and external works. As the development is a brownfields site, public access to the existing mall was carefully considered during all construction sequences. 

Structural project features include lower and upper mall floors supported via transfer beams that bridge the floor grids, some exceeding 12 metres in length. Parking includes exit and ingress elevated roadway and flyover bridges. Geotechnical challenges have included ground water conditions, and an unpredictable rock profile.

WSP played a key role in developing the initial concept for the development. Currently, we provide civil and structural engineering for all internal and external works. 

Internal scope of works:

  • Rainwater drainage, hydrology, floodlines, stormwater and attenuation systems 
  • 3D bulk earth works modelling 
  • Subsoil drainage 
  • Pavement engineering 
  • Structural alterations to the existing mall 
  • New mall extensions 
  • Basement parking and trucking tunnel 
  • Two retail levels 
  • Three parking levels above the retail levels 

External scope of works:

  • Traffic engineering for the entire development, and surrounding roads. Engineering reports, including service reports, Visuim traffic modelling for the precinct  
  • Road upgrades and mall access 
  • Seven new bridges and two bridge widenings 

We mobilised local expertise to address specific needs at critical program stages. WSP’s innovative visual representation and reporting tools increased onsite focus, accuracy, and delivery.
