Newtown Junction is a mixed-use development, located in the heart of Newtown. It consists of basement parking, retail space and commercial office space for Nedbank. The development is intended to rejuvenate the area – offering public space, a shopping experience, offices and a new City Lodge hotel.
WSP was tasked with various services in two separate projects: the design and implementation of the cooling, heating and ventilation systems for the new development; providing sustainability consulting services to achieve the targeted 4 Star Green Star design rating for the offices development from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA); and traffic and transportation engineering services.
The existing and planned road network needed to be assessed to establish whether the proposed development could be accommodated on the road network, as the development is based within a confined, built-up area in the Johannesburg CBD. The unique challenge the team encountered was that the project had to accommodate and ensure protection of historic buildings, including the Market Theatre and Museum Africa, adjacent to the site.
