SABMiller, incorporating SAB Miller Namibia, is one of the world’s largest brewing companies. It continually strives to gain market share and maximise return on investment in a sustainable manner. SAB Miller entered the Namibian market by transporting products manufactured in neighbouring countries to their main warehouse in Windhoek. Since then, market share has grown so it was considered more efficient to develop a new brewery in Okahandja, about 70km north of the capital Windhoek.

Challenges

Our client needed a brewery incorporating a sustainable design with a safe, pleasant and accessible production environment for SAB employees.

Project challenges included:

  • Several design and integration challenges had to be accommodated after contractor appointment, completion of bulk earthworks and construction of certain structural elements
  • Integration of design and planning with overseas suppliers and contractors
  • Health and safety requirements; operating in a food environment; overcoming dust control and management; work and material flow
  • Ambient temperature compared with thermal requirements, as only natural ventilation design parameters were considered
  • Stringent timelines, as the building construction end date was set while design criteria were not clearly defined

Our approach

We provided a team of professionals, including a design coordinator/ manager, architect, quantity surveyor, civil engineer, structural engineers, electrical engineers, wet services, heating ventilation and air conditioning and fire services.
