WSP provides clients with mining-specific environmental services across all stages of the mining life cycle, from exploration and pre-feasibility and feasibility, through to operation, decommissioning and closure. Since no two mining projects are the same, we tailor our environmental services to the current stage of your mining project in order to meet your immediate needs.

The mining industry has been transformed by society’s anticipation that mining operations meet more rigorous environmental standards. New, more demanding regulations have been adopted, aiming to protect the environment and resolve complex social issues.

Mining companies are adjusting to changes and are operating in a more sustainable manner, taking the biophysical, social and economic environments into consideration. Reputable mining companies are proactively contributing to the societies and communities in which they operate and report in accordance with global best practice.

Our project experience

WSP was appointed independent environmental assessment practitioner to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment for the Exxaro Coal Eerstelingsfontein Coal Mine. The proposed Eerstelingsfontein Coal Mine site was approximately 230 hectares, with the proposed mining method being open cast strip mining. The project involved comprehensive specialist scope of services, including terrestrial and aquatic ecology, surface water, groundwater, air quality, environmental noise, heritage, visual impact, socio-economic, blast and vibration, traffic and closure and rehabilitation.

WSP was appointed to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment for the establishment of a fourth open cast pit at the Anglo American Coal SA Isibonelo Colliery, termed Block Zimele. The Block Zimele area was approximately 141 hectares, with a coal capacity of approximately 9 million tons. The EIA included a water use license application and air quality specialist study.
The Rietvlei Coal Company proposed to establish a greenfields opencast coal mine, north of Middelburg on the remaining extent and Portion 1 of the farm Rietvlei 397 in Mpumalanga. WSP undertook the environmental authorisation (EIA), waste management license, water use license and mining right application for the proposed project.
