Transport is the second largest source of carbon emissions in Australia. To reach Net Zero we must decarbonise our transportation.

To decarbonise our transport, we first need to measure the whole of life carbon, including from the supply chain, its construction and the road users. By considering it early in the planning stage and then valuing the carbon appropriately, we can inform our decision-making to achieve the best results.

Developing this understanding means that tough decisions can be made where needed to minimise and mitigate the impact of emissions.

Our Carbon Zero framework includes tools to do this which have already been applied across the UK.

Reducing our trips by developing 15-minute neighbourhoods, 30-minute cities and through people-orientated developments, as well as improving and developing our digital access, will dramatically reduce the carbon emissions of our transportation while also building cleaner and healthier places for our communities.

Decarbonising transport is more than just switching to electric vehicles. It will take a complete shift in how we think about, plan for, and use transportation. We must adapt to new technologies and transition to different modes of transport, changing from private road use to active transport, mass transport, micro-mobility and electric or zero-emission vehicles.

Since the 1850s, we have spent more than 160 years basing our travel and related infrastructure around hydrocarbon-fuelled transport.

While zero-emission vehicles can still use our transport infrastructure, we need a huge investment to get the energy to where it’s needed, either through charging facilities and upgraded power networks or hydrogen-producing and refuelling infrastructure.
