Mr Delport will use the prestigious scholarship to complete a PhD in Engineering Science at Oxford University, where his research proposal has already been accepted.
‘I have always had a passion for renewable energy and this is my opportunity to create new knowledge in the field of geothermal energy using geotechnical engineering.
‘I hope my research makes a positive contribution towards the future for enhanced or engineered geothermal systems, of which Australia has promising resources.
‘It would be a privilege to one day work in the realm of influencing environmental and energy policy and innovation,’ said Mr Delport.
WSP President & CEO, Australia and New Zealand Guy Templeton congratulated Tim on his achievement.
‘Tim is a future leader in the making – we applaud his determination, thank him for his commitment and look forward to seeing the results of his research,’ said Mr Templeton.
Tim also pursues the sport of triathlon and recently placed seventh at the off-road World Championships, where he represented Australia for his age group (20-24 years). When asked about how his research will affect his sporting endeavours, Mr Delport expressed his excitement at the chance to partner with Oxford, given their long history in supporting the ‘student athlete’.
‘Like engineering, triathlon can take you anywhere in the world and the people you meet can be truly inspiring,’ said Mr Delport.
Mr Delport joins a cohort of 147 scholars named since the scholarship’s inception in 2004. The Sir John Monash Scholarships are the most important postgraduate scholarships available in Australia today. They are awarded to outstanding Australians who demonstrate remarkable qualities of leadership and have the ability to deliver outcomes and inspire others for the benefit of Australia. The scholarship supports up to three years of postgraduate study at prestigious universities around the world.
