The urban renewal project is one of the most significant of its kind to have ever been undertaken in the region. The development will contain seven hectares of residential and retail development that comprise of 1,252 apartments and townhouses and a shopping precinct. The development will also include an additional seven hectares of parklands and open space.
Engaged for our sustainability services, WSP worked alongside the Grocon project team to ensure the maximum Green Star rating was achieved.
The 6 Star Green Star Communities rating that the Parklands Project achieved is awarded to community scale projects for excellence in sustainability relating to governance, liveability, economic prosperity, environment and innovation initiatives.
6 Star Green Star Communities projects promote well connected, diverse, inclusive and healthy places that decrease environmental impact. The Parklands Project has demonstrated these principles through adopting several sustainability features. These include; planting 136,420 new trees across the site, assuming green building design, re-establishing a natural creek and floodplain, creating large green spaces across the site and adopting smart metering that aims to decrease energy and water consumption.

The Parklands Project has also achieved a maximum possible score for the criteria on innovation through undertaking numerous innovative initiatives. These include:
- Partnering with the local community to raise funds for Southport Special School
- Including a changing place facility and accessible residential design
- Creating a Reconciliation Action Plan
- Supporting Indigenous students through skills training
- Providing sustainability awareness/education centres on site that inform people about the sustainability features of Parklands and
- Acknowledging and integrating culture, heritage and community identity in Parklands’ design
