The highly anticipated Sydney Light, Music and Ideas Festival starts tonight and our Sydney Lighting team, led by Fiona Venn have designed and constructed an installation titled ‘Reflection,’ to be included in this year’s line up.
Reflection is an interactive installation inspired by popularised decorative lightboxes that allow you to spell out your thoughts for the day, also reminiscent of an old-fashioned movie billboard. Reflection includes three installations, each of which span across over 10 meters.
From a distance the light art is encryptic, but as you get closer a reflective surface mirrors symbols on the lit up boxs which reveal inspirational words. Motivated by Sydney's 'dream big' attitude, the reflective aspect of the installation is both literal and figurative, looking to inspire and engage participants to similarly reflect on their own hopes and dreams.
Being the biggest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, Associate Director, Specialist Lighting, Fiona Venn is delighted that WSP were able to get involved.
“We are thrilled to have ‘Reflection’ selected as an artwork for VIVID. The lighting event has become a go-to for locals and tourists alike and the calibre of artworks in this year’s festival is outstanding.”
“Many people helped bring this project to life. We collaborated with Jadecross, Star Group and HASSELL. WSP Lighting Designer Rachel Smith originally conceived the idea, our Structures team advised on the build and a number of people from our Sydney office volunteered their time towards constructing the installation.”
VIVID Festival will run over three weeks from the 26th May to the 17th June.
‘Reflection’ is located in the Royal Botanical Gardens near the Conservatorium of Music Building. If you are in Sydney make sure to visit and take some happy snaps.
