Building on our recently released Global Cities Index, and as part of benefiting clients and the communities in which we operate, WSP today hosted a joint event with the Committee for Sydney (CfS) at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney.
Featuring Professor Carlo Ratti, Director of Urban Technologies & Planning, and Director of SENSEable City Lab, MIT, together with our very own, Richard Palmer, Director of Sustainability, the event examined new approaches to the study of the built environment, ones that include layers of network and digital information.
Professor Ratti and his team at SENSEable City Lab develop and deploy tools to learn about cities – so that they can learn about us. He discussed two projects undertaken by the lab: City Scanner, an initiative that saw urban vehicles turned into sensing platforms, and a recent partnership with the State of Victoria, looking at the transformational possibilities of Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technologies and how digital technologies can enhance liveability in Fishermans Bend.
Named as one of the 25 people who will change the world of design by Blueprint Magazine and one of the 50 most influential designers in America by Fast Company, Professor Ratti has also been featured in Wired Magazine’s Smart List.
Following his presentation, Professor Ratti joined Richard Palmer on a high-profile panel alongside Jess Miller, Deputy Lord Mayor – City for Sydney and Pascal Perez, Senior Professor & SMART Infrastructure Facility – University of Wollongong.
