This marks the culmination of more than ten years’ collaboration with our client, Frasers Property Australia and Sekisui House, in helping to design one of the greenest and most self-sufficient precincts of its kind in Australia.
Central Park is an exemplary urban regeneration project that has created a green urban village and become an iconic feature of Sydney’s skyline.
The multi-staged development strived for the highest sustainability rating across the mixed-use sites and aimed to use sustainable energy and water infrastructure at a scale not seen before in Australia. Achieving the Green Star site-wide assessment validation has enabled buildings within the precinct to achieve individual 5 Star – Green Star rating certification in both Design and As-Built.
Our Sustainability team worked closely with the Client to undertake a site-wide approach to the sustainability initiatives, ensuring that the development created a vibrant and green precinct where sustainability becomes a way of life.
Tim Parker, our Director of Sustainability, believes that our responsive client service throughout the project delivery has underpinned this achievement.
“While our initial engagement was to help our Client develop a site-wide infrastructure solution that supported low-carbon energy and recycled water, this evolved into a decade-long collaboration; as the site evolved, our engagement evolved over separate buildings across the precinct.”
The Central Park precinct now encompasses a range of residential opportunities, including student dwellings, as well as commercial and retail facilities, all designed with the common objective, to improve liveability and enrich its surroundings.
“Throughout the process we helped guide our Client and the wider project team on site-wide initiatives, along with influencing the design of eight buildings across the precinct, to optimise efficiency and maximise the performance of these buildings.
“Some of our proudest achievements are the on-site central thermal tri-generation plant and on-site water recycling plant, which will reduce carbon emissions and minimise the mains water demand. Most remarkably, the excess water and electricity may be exported to nearby neighbourhoods and enable self-sufficiency for the community.”
With our Building Services team also engaged throughout the project delivery, Rob Clarke, Acting Director of Property & Buildings, says, “Establishing a long, mutually beneficial relationship has delivered success; by working closely together, our two teams were aligned in understanding objectives and ensuring the facilitation of hard and soft sustainable initiatives to help shape a green future for the inner-city community of Sydney.”
This innovative precinct has received industry recognition worldwide. Most recently, Central Park was awarded the overall category award for Urban Habitat – District / Master Plan Scale at the 2019 CTBUH Awards for Excellence in Shenzhen, China, and one of only two Australian project to be awarded this overall category win.
